Therapeutic Modalities

WHAT ARE THERAPEUTIC MODALITIES?

ULTRASOUND

Therapeutic Ultrasound uses tiny sound waves to stimulate body tissues at a cellular level. It is widely used to promote healing of soft tissue injuries and decrease inflammation. Depending on how it is used, it can also be implemented as a gentle heating modality that helps to increase circulation.

INTERFENTIAL CURRENT (IFC) THERAPY

IFC therapy uses controlled electrical pulses to help decrease pain and muscle spasm. The current is applied through pads that are placed on the surface of the skin. Different settings can be used to address either acute or chronic pain, and the user controls the intensity to make sure that it is a comfortable sensation.

TRANSCUTANEOUS ELECTRICAL NERVE STIMULATION (TENS)

TENS is a small, portable unit that administers small electric pulses to help you control pain without medication. These machines can be used for chronic or acute pain and are ideal for use when at home or on the go. TENS machines are available for purchase at our clinic and are often covered by extended health benefits (with proper medical documentation).

PARAFFIN WAX

Wax baths are an excellent treatment modality to assist individuals suffering from arthritis, carpal tunnel syndrome, fibromyalgia, or general pain and stiffness. In our clinic, we use paraffin wax to apply deep, penetrating heat to the hands and wrists.

LOW LEVEL LASER THERAPY (ALSO KNOWN AS COLD LASER)

Therapeutic laser can be used to safely treat orthopaedic injuries and control pain. Low level laser therapy is very safe and there is evidence to support that it provides a pain-numbing effect on nerves, as well as positive metabolic effects on soft tissue healing. It is able to penetrate deeply into body tissues to reach areas that cannot be stimulated by other modalities.

TRACTION OR SPINAL DECOMPRESSION

Mechanical traction has been utilized for years as a safe solution in the treatment of spinal conditions involving nerve root compression/impingement, acute muscular spasm and osteoarthritic degenerative changes. Clinical benefits of traction include decreased pain and muscle tone, increased range of motion and flexibility.
